BEST PLACE TO CHANGE YOUR HAIR COLOR

Staff pick: Shag the Salon

110 Warren, 222-1700

Think of Shag's David Reed as a less dangerous Edward Scissorhands.

And as a bonus, he has gigantic hands to cradle your head in the sink.

David Reed has made it. Together with his partner Keith Taylor, owner of the sadly defunct antiques shop InsideOut, Reed has started his own hair salon, the fabulously wicked Shag. Whatever your hair request - however wild, however short the notice - Reed comes through with flying, ehm, colors. A big brunette bouffant like a 1960s Betty Crocker? No problem. What about a flip - a streak of red that only shows when your hair is parted a certain way? Easily achieved. Pink hair to match a Halloween costume? In half an hour? Consider it done.

Where else, I ask of thee, will you be greeted with a selection of fine beers from which to sip as you await your turn in the chair? From the receptionist table - actually, a hollowed-out old-school TV stand with an aquarium in place of the screen - to the lime green styling chairs, Shag offers the finest in faux-retro styles for the interior. But the clientele - if somewhat cooler than most - consists of the tattooed and the pinstriped, and the hairstyles range from funky to mainstream. Best of all, Shag's prices are insanely reasonable for the amount of time that goes into your 'do - even if several layers of bleaching, cutting, and dying are required. LMF
